How to Deal with Tantrums

Often times, your child will throw tantrums. You can distinguish if this tantrums signifies an immediate need or just a result of an unexpressed want. Here are some ways on how to deal with tantrums.

1. Identify the type of tantrum. Identify if this tantrum shows that the child is in pain or if he is just being manipulative to get what he wants.

2. Take action. If the child is in pain or needs immediate help, attend to his needs right away. If he is being manipulative, ignore the child. Be firm when you say "no". This is needed so that he will realize that his tantrums won't work to manipulate people to do what he wants. Make sure that he is being ignored in a safe place, where he won't hurt himself or won't be able to throw heavy things.

3. Calm your child. After he is done throwing tantrums, lead him to where he needs to be or make him do what you said. Again, we should be firm and consistent in making our children obey. It's either we give in or we become consistent so that manipulative behaviors will be lessened.
